HISTORICAL INCIDENTS THAT AFFECTED THE US EMBASSY TOKYO
SOURCE: GEMINI.AI
The Tokyo post represents one of the most high-profile and diplomatically sensitive missions in the Pacific. While generally considered a "safe" post, its history is marked by massive political protests that once forced a U.S. President to cancel a visit and a recurring series of "lone wolf" attacks on high-ranking officials.
1. The "Anpo" Protests and the Hagerty Incident (1960)
This is the defining security event for the Tokyo detachment's history. In 1960, hundreds of thousands of protesters took to the streets to oppose the Anpo (U.S.-Japan Security Treaty).
The Hagerty Incident (June 10, 1960): President Eisenhower’s Press Secretary, James Hagerty, arrived at Haneda Airport to prepare for the President's visit. His car was mobbed by thousands of protesters who rocked the vehicle and shattered the windows with stones.
The Marine Rescue: In a legendary moment for the detachment, a U.S. Marine helicopter was dispatched to the airport. It hovered over the mob, and Hagerty had to be winched/rescued from the crowd.
Outcome: The security situation was so volatile that the Japanese government had to cancel President Eisenhower’s visit. For the MSG detachment, this was a period of "Condition II" (Standby to Destroy), with Marines securing the Chancery perimeter against massive crowds for weeks.
2. Attacks on the Ambassador (1964 & 1969)
The Tokyo post has seen several direct attempts on the lives of U.S. Ambassadors, testing the "Close Protection" and residential security protocols of the detachment.
Ambassador Reischauer (March 24, 1964): Ambassador Edwin O. Reischauer was stabbed in the leg by a mentally unstable young man right outside the embassy gates. He survived, but the incident led to a total redesign of the embassy’s public access points.
Video: Amb. Reischauer Stabbed in LegAmbassador Meyer (July 30, 1969): Ambassador A.H. Meyer was attacked by a knife-wielding citizen. These "lone wolf" incidents highlight why the Tokyo MSG detachment maintains such a high degree of vigilance despite the lack of organized terrorist threats.
