One of Peter's teammates said in an email to us: On the morning that Peter gave his life, I was one of the four that he saved with his move to block the car bomber from the motorcade. If he hadn't made the move that he did, my vehicle would have taken the hit. He died a Hero! "

Master Sgt. Hunt was providing security as part of a six-vehicle improvised-explosive-device response team with Marine Wing Support Squadron 371 in Al Taqaddam, Iraq. A large explosion near one of the vehicles wounded four Marines, and while the team gave the wounded first aid, Hunt’s vehicle, an armored Humvee, hit an anti-tank mine. Hunt suffered burns to over 60 percent of his body in the explosion. He was medically evacuated to Balad, Iraq, and then transported to Brooke Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, on July 26. Hunt died of cardiac arrest Oct. 12 due to complications from the wounds he received. He is survived by his wife Maria and two children, Kenneth III and Kimberly, all of whom were with him when he died.

(From Together-we-Served): Officer Schmidt was shot and killed after she and her partner responded to a call reporting a woman with a gun. Contact was made with the 60-year-old female suspect and while the officers were questioning her, she said she needed to go to the bathroom. Officer Schmidt escorted the woman to the public restroom in the lobby of the building. While in the restroom, the woman produced a handgun and opened fire, striking Officer Schmidt in the abdomen below her vest. Officer Schmidt was able to return fire and killed the suspect.
